With 2026 intakes now completed, the focus for most students and parents planning ahead is 2027. New Zealand runs up to three intakes a year, February, July, and a limited November intake, but exact dates and availability are set by each institution individually, not by a central government calendar. What is centralised and official is the visa timeline every student needs to plan around, and it’s the part of the process where our advisers spend the most time with families.

New Zealand’s academic year has two main intakes, February and July, plus a smaller November intake for select programmes. Intake dates and availability vary by university and course, so it’s important to always confirm directly on the institution’s official calendar. This guide focuses on the one part of the timeline that is officially standardised: the visa application process.

The Three Intakes at a Glance

February, the Semester 1 intake, is the primary intake for New Zealand institutions. It is offered across all 8 universities, with the widest programme choice and the most scholarship opportunities.

July, the Semester 2 intake, is a strong secondary option, also offered across all 8 universities. This intake works well for students who need more preparation time.

November is a more limited intake, mainly available for specific diplomas, vocational courses, or trimester based programmes at select institutions. It is not a universal option across all universities or courses. Consequently, course specific availability should always be confirmed directly with the university, which is one of the first checks we run for any student.

Why Applying Early Matters for 2027 (Visa Timeline)

Immigration New Zealand recommends applying for a student visa at least 3 months before intended travel. Processing typically takes roughly 8 weeks minimum once a complete application is submitted. Additionally, an Offer of Place from an approved provider is required before a visa application can even be lodged.

Therefore, for any 2027 intake, document preparation and provider applications should ideally start well before the visa window opens. This is exactly the kind of timeline we help families map out early.

What Determines a Programme’s Start Date

The Offer of Place document specifies the programme’s actual start date and minimum completion time, making it the authoritative reference for each application. Furthermore, programme length, a minimum of 2 semesters over at least 8 months, or one academic year, affects both visa conditions and Post Study Work Visa eligibility later.

Planning Backwards From a 2027 Intake

The first step is to confirm the specific university’s 2027 application deadline for the chosen intake, directly on the institution’s official page. From there, plan backwards from that deadline, allowing time for English test results, document collection, and the recommended 3 month pre-travel visa buffer.

Missing a deadline for one intake generally means waiting for the next cycle, so early planning matters more for popular courses and the more limited November intake. Building this backwards timeline with a student is one of the first things we do once a target intake is chosen.

What Students Should Do Now for 2027

To stay on track for a 2027 intake, students should:

  • Confirm the specific 2027 intake date and application deadline directly with the target university or adviser, since February, July, and November all vary by institution
  • Work backwards from that deadline using INZ’s 3 month pre-travel guidance
  • Check how the programme’s completion date lines up with Post Study Work Visa eligibility
  • Get advice early, since visa processing delays can affect intake start dates, and popular courses fill up ahead of deadlines

Planning for a 2027 intake comes down to one thing: working backwards from your target date with enough time built in for tests, documents, and visa processing. Whichever intake you’re aiming for, February, July, or November, starting early is what protects your options rather than limiting them. Reach out to IEGC, and we’ll help you build that timeline from day one.
